Afghanistan – General Election

After decades of conflict, Afghanistan held its first Presidential Elections on October 9th, 2004. Despite threats from insurgents to disrupt this historic event, Kabul and most of the countryside remained relatively calm on election day.

Women came out in high numbers to vote but very little in repect of women’s rights has improved since the ousting of the Taleban. With most of the country devasted by war it is hoped the elections will be a turning point for reconstruction to begin.
