A general scene overlooking Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. Many of the houses are built on crowded hill sides from local materials making them susceptible to landslides during times of flooding, cyclones and earthquakes.
The Solomon Islands are prone to natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones and tsunamis. The Natural Disaster Risk Management program run by Caritas Australia trains teachers in emergency response, community evacuation plans and strategies to teach children emergency responses to natural disasters through song, nursery rhymes and role play.
