Burma (Myanmar) held only it’s third election in 50 years on April 1st 2012. The National League for Democracy (NLD) was competing for the first time since 1990. NLD leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was contesting a place in the by-election in Kawhmu, south west of Rangoon (Yangon), the first time she has stood for election. The election will be viewed as a test of how serious recent political reform is for the standing government.
