A bonfire in Tigers Bay, north Belfast.

Bonfires are constructed in Loyalist Protestant communities in Belfast for burning on July 11th, the eve of the annual July 12th Orange Order celebrations that commemorates the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 where the Protestant King William of Orange defeated the Catholic King James.

The bonfires often have symbols of Irish nationalism and republicanism such as the Irish tricolour flag that will be burnt.v

There are at least 70-80 such bonfires within Belfast alone which are made mostly by stacked wooden pallets and tires.

More than a decade after a peace deal was signed, Belfast has over 80 peace lines and interface areas that separate Catholic and Protestant communities.
