Belfast Peacelines

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) use water cannons to disperse Catholic nationalists after violence erupts following the controversial annual July 12th Protestant Orange Order parade which passes along the nationalist section of Crumlin Road in Ardoyne, north Belfast.

The annual July 12th Protestant Orange Order celebrations see thousands of Orangemen, marching bands and supporter’s parade through Belfast commemorating the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 where the Protestant King William of Orange defeated the Catholic King James.

More than a decade after a peace deal was signed, Belfast has over 80 peace lines and interface areas that separate Catholic and Protestant communities.
